Item Augustus Watanabe Oral History Interview Part 1 and Part 2, April 15, 2008(2018-03-24) Grau, KevinDr. Augustus Watanabe received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Wheaton College in 1963 and a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1967. He did additional postgraduate work in clinical pharmacology at the Laboratory of Clinical Science of the National Institute of Mental Health and in cardiology at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Watanabe was a full-time faculty member at Indiana University School of Medicine from 1971 to 1990, and, in 1978, he became the youngest Professor of Medicine at the University. From 1983 to 1990, he served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine.Item Clyde G. Culbertson Oral History Interview, December 3, 1976(2018-03-23) Brandt, Rick; Sumpter, WallyClyde G. Culbertson was a medical educator and researcher who developed a process that enabled the Salk polio vaccine to be mass-produced. He helped oversee the development of vaccines and drugs in his 25 years at Eli Lilly & Company in Indianapolis, where he became the director of biological research. Besides his contribution to the Salk vaccine, Dr. Culbertson helped develop a safer rabies vaccine and the antibiotic erythromycin. He also discovered that nonparasitic amoeba can fatally infect the brains of humans. In honor of his accomplishments, one species, Acanthamoeba culbertsoni, was named for him.Item D. Craig Brater When he joined Indiana University in 1986, he helped establish the Division of Clinical Pharmacology in the Department of Medicine. Later, he was selected as the chair of the Department of Medicine in 1990. In 2008, Brater was awarded an honorary doctorate from Purdue University. In 2013, he retired from IU after a combined 27 years of service, and was presented with The University Medal, by IU President Michael McRobbie, for his dedicated leadership through his career. Throughout his career, he has published over 150 medical papers in peer reviewed journals.Item Daniel F. Bowen to his current position as CEO of Clarian Health Partners, Daniel F. Evans, Jr. has been a witness to and a participant in the transformation of the medical marketplace in state of Indiana. Given the importance of the creation of Clarian Health Partners to the development of the IU School of Medicine, Mr. Evans provides a vital perspective on the recent history of the school. His position with an adjacent and interdependent institution offers a unique narrative on the evolution of clinical practice in IUSM and the concomitant changes in teaching and research.Item George Lukemeyer Oral History Interview Part 1 and Part 2, December 8, 2000(2018-03-24) Van Allen, ElizabethGeorge Lukemeyer practiced medicine for over 60 years and specialized in internal medicine.
