Sachs-Bauer Family Letters and Documents

John George Bauer (1821-1858) was born in Neckarddenzlingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany.Bauer came to the United States in 1846 and settled in Indianapolis in 1848, where he became a merchant tailor. In 1850 he married Mary Sachs (1829-1903). She was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Her family left Germany in 1830. They first settled in Hagerstown, Maryland, then moved to Indianapolis in 1836. The collection consists of documents related to the Bauer and Sachs families, including passports, marriage contracts, and letters from friends and relatives in Germany and in the United States. The documents and letters were donated by Beverly Fauvre, the great-great-granddaughter of John George and Mary Bauer. Most of the documents are in German. The translations in this collection were done by Teodora Durbin of the IUPUI University Library staff.
