In the 19th century German immigrants in Indianapolis formed mutual benefits societies (called Unterstuetzungs Vereins in German) to provide sick and death benefits for their members. One such organization is the Heimaths' Unterstuetzungs Vereins, organized in 1897. The organization provided financial assistance to their members and organized cultural and social activities. The society remains active. It is a member of the city's Federation of German Societies. The organization recorded its records in German from 1897 until August 1950,then switched to English in September 1950.
